Western Cape SCO

back to school time...

Its back to school time! I know

this sounds like music to some,

as pips will be hooking up with

friendz, some meeting nu pips

and making nu (friendz+ships).

To some this might be a

challenging time due to some

challenges. All I can say is that,

don't despair, God is on your side.

Just cast your burdens unto Him,

for He cares for u (1 Pet. 5:7).

As we were searching for great

stories that would inspire

scholars, we came across a

humble man of God Mr Lubabalo

Kem, who has been involved

with SCO for quite some time. His involvement with SCO started a way back in the year 2000 from Funda High school at Dongwe, Queenstown. It was an initiative of four brothers who established SCO at Funda, and other schools in the vicinity.

Post matriculation he enrolled with Pentech, now referred to as CPUT (Bellville) for B. Ed. (Bachelor of Education). At that time SCO did not exist at CPUT, he then joined AOG (Assemblies of God), and was part of the leadership who merged AOG and PCF (Pentech Christian Fellowship) to become SCO in 2005.

In 2007 after completion of his studies he took up a teaching post at Bulumko High in Khayelitsha. At his arrival SCO was not active, from what he was told it used to be but was now dissolved. due to lack of super- vision from Educators. He then became a catalyst in reviving SCO at this school, with the support of two other educators. “ The re- sponse we got was amazing ” he says.

Scholars would sacrifice their lunch time and meet during 45 minutes break for Praise ‘n Worship on Wednesday, which was attended by most of the scholars. The other days it would be sharing of the Word and Fridays were Prayer days.

They con- tinued to have around 45 members with the constant support of other scholars, who could be referred to as potential future members by faith.

He says “Well, the year 2007 was indeed a wonderful year for SCO at Bulumko, I have seen God changing the lives of learners. I was so amazed by the zeal they had for God, inspite of others laughing at them. It was totally a new atmosphere for many of them to be at SCO. Everyone who went there would be excited and invite others to come and see God changing young lives. Every- one was welcome irrespective of the denomination they belonged to; we just wanted to make Christ known by everyone. It was fun, exciting, encouraging and empower- ing!"

Highlights: The closing function in October, where we were saying bon voyage to some of the matriculating members. Some brothers from SCO-UWC visited us and shared the moment with us. I saw God breaking the walls of our differences irrespective where we come from.

Challenges: We didn’t have relationship with other schools, nor with the Provincial or National office. I believe that this will challenge other brethrens from other schools to follow suite and establish SCO in their school. We trust God to advance the work of SCO to every School in this generation.

We encourage Educators to supervise, support and encourage learners in advancing the Kingdom of God in their schools. With so much crime and violence in our schools, there’s no doubt that Christian learners and educators can stand in the gap for the situations in our schools and make Jesus King!
